Brussels, 1-2 September 2025 — The eighth ECAC Environmental Forum took place at EUROCONTROL’s headquarters in Brussels, just weeks ahead of the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal.
The Forum opened with a welcome from Tânia Cardoso Simões, Director of the Aviation Transformation Directorate at EUROCONTROL, speaking on behalf of Director General Raúl Medina Caballero.
In her keynote reflection, Rannia Leontaridi (Director General for Civil Aviation, United Kingdom, and ECAC Focal Point for Environment) reminded participants that the upcoming Assembly would be a decisive moment for consolidating and implementing the ambitious goals already agreed by States.
“The future of aviation depends not only on how high we aim, but on our determination to deliver on our collective commitments,” she underlined.
The Forum paid tribute to Urs Ziegler (Federal Office of Civil Aviation, Switzerland), who chaired his final Forum after more than two decades of leadership in ECAC’s environmental work. His contribution has been pivotal in driving progress on many initiatives and fostering cooperation among Member States, international partners and industry.
Across two days, participants exchanged views on a wide range of topics, including:
• International developments and recent ICAO and European initiatives
• Progress towards the long-term global aspirational goal (LTAG), including the LTAG Monitoring and Reporting (LMR) Methodology and EUROCONTROL’s FlyingGreen platform
• Updates from Member States on State Action Plans to reduce emissions
• Expectations for the 42nd ICAO Assembly, discussed in a panel featuring civil society, ECAC, the European Commission, industry, and partners from Transport Canada and the United States Federal Aviation Administration
• Dedicated sessions on sustainable aviation fuels, non-CO₂ emissions, and global cooperation, with contributions from the Arab Civil Aviation Organization, the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission and other key stakeholders.
The Forum reaffirmed ECAC’s commitment to advancing the global aviation sustainability agenda, while setting the stage for constructive dialogue at the ICAO Assembly.
