How to develop a national sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) roadmap

Videoconference, 26 April 2023 — The 18th monthly familiarisation webinar on basic knowledge on aviation and the environment focused on understanding how to develop a national sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) roadmap based on ECAC guidance material and on case studies from individual European States.
The ECAC Secretariat presented the recommendations in this respect contained in the ECAC Guidance on Sustainable Aviation Fuels, which was published in February 2023.
Speakers from France and Switzerland presented practical examples of how they have developed national SAF strategies and roadmaps, highlighting the key challenges faced, objectives established, and the steps taken.
Boris Stolz, Scientific Associate at the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation, presented the recently launched Swiss Strategy, which promotes the development and use of SAF. He underlined how this process helped engage stakeholders and put SAF on the agenda of other key national actors.
Mathilde Tannous, Biofuels and EU-ETS Program Manager at the French DGCA, illustrated how the French roadmap for the deployment of SAF had been developed, and also underlined the importance of working with other government departments, such as energy and environment, to ensure a successful implementation of the roadmap.
Sixty-eight participants from ECAC Member States, organisations and stakeholders joined the webinar.
